Research on the Application of Multi-Sensory Compensationin Age-Friendly Museum Exhibition Design:Taking “Park of Aging” in Miraikan as an Example

Abstract:
In the face of the increasingly severe aging population trend in China, the transformation of museums into age-friendly institutions requires further deepening and expansion. Current practices in domestic museums predominantly focus on physical accessibility, while the design of exhibition content and sensory experiences often fails to adequately address the characteristics of cognitive and sensory decline in the elderly. Integrating the theories of “embodied cognition” and “multi-sensory compensation”, this paper proposes a design framework for age-friendly museums that shifts the focus from “functional supplementation” to “experiential compensation”. Taking the “Park of Aging” in Miraikan (the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, Japan) as an example, the paper employs empirical analysis to examine how its multisensory interactive exhibits simulate the aging process, activate compensatory mechanisms, and foster intergenerational empathy. Accordingly, localized implementation pathways are proposed, encompassing graded implementation strategies, upfront user research, and multi-modal information compensation. The study demonstrates that multi-sensory compensation mechanisms serve not only as an effective means to address the “difficulty in viewing exhibitions” experienced by older audiences, but also as an innovative design methodology for building all-age-inclusive spaces and fostering social inclusion.
