Abstract:
On April 27,2026, the China Science and Technology Museum hosted the 4th Academic Salon themed “First Principles of Exhibits”. The salon assembled five experts from both within and outside the museum to explore topics spanning information density and design strategies, the essence of interaction, phenomenon-driven design, the living inheritance of ancient science and technology, and the implications of information interaction technologies. This paper systematically summarizes the core viewpoints of the salon. Increasing “knowledge density” and “experiential richness” is key to addressing the challenge of low information density. Design strategies based on “counter-normality, counter-intuition, and counter-experience”, along with visualization approaches that “make the abstract visible”, effectively enhance visitor perception. The value of exhibits in embodied cognition is irreplaceable. The presentation of ancient technology should be upgraded from “isolated artifacts” to “complete systems”. Information technology should complement physical exhibits through virtual-actual integration. The participating experts agreed that exhibit design should return to “first principles”, with the fundamental goal of awakening curiosity and providing embodied experiences.
Key words:  science and technology museum, academic salon, exhibit design, first principles, interactive experience
