Abstract: |
After decades of increasing global communication and connection, supported by economic, political and technological change, countries in many parts of the world have again begun strengthening their borders and their national identities in response to real and cyber terrorism and mass migration. These nations have become more inward looking and more suspicious of the world. International exhibitions from the world's great museums have long been central to preventing this happening:to maintaining good relationships, on-going conversations and common understandings between nations. I want to explore these apparently contradictory museum roles:on the one hand, museums as institutions involved in establishing borders and identities and, on the other, institutions that build bridges between peoples. There is no contradiction here. International dialogue relies upon the establishment of secure and resilient cultural identities. However, the path to ‘global cultural harmony’ requires us to think differently about the role of culture in our understanding of the world. It involves finally sweeping aside the last remnants of Western cultural imperialism that hide in academic disciplines and in such concepts as art, modernisation and the museum. The global future involves situated understandings of culture and cultural production. It involves a renewed appreciation of global cultural diversity. |
