A History of Ignorance in Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab

Abstract:
Around 1900, scientists had already discovered the harm of radioactivity to the human body in the early research on radium. In the 50 years since the birth of the Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab, two important events occurred:the “Radium Girls” and the atomic bomb explosion. The harm of radioactivity to the human body should have been clearly recognized, but this dangerous toy with radioactive minerals still successfully entered the children's toy market. Examining the history of radioactive knowledge through the lens of ignorance studies, the study reveals that behind the Gilbert U-238 Atomic Energy Lab, there are three kinds of ignorance of scientists and the public about radioactivity:scientific ignorance, socially constructed ignorance and structural ignorance. It is under their combined influence that both scientists and the public have consistently exhibited gaps in their understanding of the hazards of radioactivity.
